Judge Guide
How to use the Judge View to manage tables, report results, issue penalties, and control the timer.
Accessing the Judge View
The Judge View is a mobile-first interface designed to be used on a phone or tablet while walking the tournament floor.
How to Access
- You must be added as a judge to the tournament or organization by the organizer.
- Go to your Dashboard β you will see a "Judge" section listing tournaments you have access to.
- Tap on a tournament to open the Judge View.
Tip: The Judge View works best on mobile devices. It features a dark-mode interface optimized for venue lighting conditions.
Navigation Tabs
The Judge View has 5 tabs in the bottom navigation bar:
Tables Tab
The main tab showing all pairings for the current round as a grid of cards.
Table Density Modes
Switch between 3 display densities to see more or fewer tables at once:
Normal (3 columns)
Full detail: table number, player names, status badge, score, time extension, judge assignment, featured star.
Compact (4 columns)
Condensed: table number, status badge, abbreviated time extension. Good for medium-sized tournaments.
Ultra (8 columns)
Minimal: table number only, shown as small squares. Best for large tournaments where you need a quick overview of which tables are still playing.
Filters
Use filter chips at the top to show only specific tables:
Table Detail Panel
Tap on any table to open the detail panel. From here you can:
- Report results β Enter the match score.
- Reset a result β Clear a previously reported score.
- Add time extension β Grant extra time to the table.
- Seat/unseat a judge β Mark yourself as the judge on this table.
- Toggle featured β Mark the match for broadcast or display.
- View penalty history β See all penalties for each player at this table.
- View decklists β See each player's submitted decklist.
- Drop a player β Remove a player from the tournament.
Reporting Results
Tap a table and use the quick score buttons to enter the result. The format depends on the tournament's Best-of setting:
Best-of-1
Best-of-3
Additional options: 1-0, 0-1 (incomplete match), and 0-0-3 (triple draw). A "Custom" button is also available for non-standard results.
Best-of-5
After selecting a score, a preview is shown with player names color-coded (green for winner, red for loser). Tap "Submit Result" to confirm.
Penalties Tab
The Penalties tab provides a complete penalty management system. You can view all issued penalties and create new ones.
Penalty Levels
Penalty Categories
- Game Play Errors β In-game rule violations (e.g., missed trigger, looking at extra cards, hidden card error).
- Tournament Errors β Procedural infractions (e.g., tardiness, slow play, decklist problem, outside assistance).
- Unsporting Conduct β Behavior issues (e.g., minor, major, bribery).
Creating a Penalty (3-Step Wizard)
The penalty creation form guides you through 3 steps:
Category
Choose the category (Game Play Error, Tournament Error, Unsporting Conduct).
Infraction
Select the specific infraction (list depends on the game being played).
Details
Add notes, set time extension, and optionally issue a related penalty to the opponent.
Infractions are game-specific. For example, Magic: The Gathering includes infractions like Missed Trigger, Looking at Extra Cards, Game Rule Violation, Tardiness, and Slow Play. Each infraction has a default penalty level that can be adjusted.
Opponent Penalty
Some situations require a related penalty for the opponent (e.g., a communication violation that affected both players). The wizard allows you to issue both penalties at once.
Time Extensions
When a match needs extra time (e.g., after a judge call or penalty), you can add a time extension directly from the table detail panel.
Quick Extension Buttons
Extension Modes
- Add β Add minutes to the existing extension (cumulative). Example: +3 min, then +2 min = 5 min total.
- Set β Set the total extension to a specific value. Example: set to 5 min replaces any previous extension.
Extensions can also be added via the penalty wizard β useful when time is lost due to a judge call or infraction.
Extension Log
Every extension is logged with the judge name, timestamp, number of minutes, and optional note. This helps track why extra time was given.
Judge Alice β +3 min β "Judge call for missed trigger" β 14:32
Judge Bob β +2 min β "Deck check" β 14:45
Timer Tab
The Timer tab gives judges control over the round clock. The timer is synchronized in real-time across all devices (players, judges, Mirror Display).
Timer Controls
Timer Color Coding
- Green β More than 10 minutes remaining.
- Amber β Between 5 and 10 minutes remaining, or timer is paused.
- Red β Less than 5 minutes remaining or time expired.
Settings Tab
The Settings tab lets you customize the Judge View for your comfort:
- Day / Night Mode β Toggle between light and dark themes.
- Language β Switch between English and French.
- Accent Color β Customize the interface color theme.
Activity Log
Every action taken in the Judge View is logged: result reports, result resets, penalty issuance, time extensions, player drops, etc. This provides an audit trail for the entire tournament.
Access the activity log from the top of the Judge View. It shows:
- The staff member who performed the action.
- What action was taken (report result, issue penalty, etc.).
- The details (table number, players involved, penalty type).
- The exact timestamp.
Logs can be filtered by action type for quick review.
